The total project comprises of twelve wind farms located on twelve sites in southwestern Minnesota.

The projects were conceived as a means of allowing local farmers and businesses to benefit from southwestern Minnesota's considerable wind resources through actual ownership of facilities.

The project was developed by DanMar & Associates, Inc., a Minnesota-based development company.

The Wind Turbines were supplied by Suzlon Wind Energy Corp.

The power produced is sold to Northern States Power Company, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, Inc. and to Great River Energy.

The Minnesota Small Producer Incentive (MSPI) provides cash payments per kWh produced by its facility for ten years to the projects. Each project is owned by a local farmer or small businessman and qualifies for MSPI.

Technology

The projects have been constructed with world-class Suzlon S.64/950kW Wind Turbines with 64 m rotor diameter and 64.5 m hub height. Some of the features of the Wind Turbines are :

Micro-pitching: Unmatched full span blade pitching with 0.1 degree resolution and a response time of 30 msec to extract every possible unit of power.

Minimum stress and load: Well-balanced weight distribution ensures lower static and dynamic loads.

Grid-friendly power quality: High speed asynchronous generator with a multi-stage intelligent switching compensation system delivers power factor up to 0.99 with harmonics free sinusoidal power.

Higher performance: Designed to achieve high efficiency and co-efficient of power.

Power Output

In-depth wind resource analysis utilizing approximately three and a half years of wind data has been performed for each location. The estimated energy output from these projects is approximately 86 million kWh per annum.

Production Incentives

The projects qualify to receive cash MSPI payments of $0.015/kWh produced for 10 years. The project is also eligible to utilize the federal PTC of approximately $0.018/kWh generated and sold (escalated by the annual change in CPI)  for 10 years.

Project Status

All the projects have been commissioned in 2003. As of February 2004, 26 million kWh have been fed into the grid.

Operation & Maintenance

Suzlon operates and maintains the Wind Turbines. The advanced SCADA system helps monitor all the important parameters of each turbine 24/7. The projects being close to Suzlon's North American service support headquarters, which are based out of Pipestone, makes the projects at a geographically vantage point for any support that may be required. A team of experienced and trained engineers is stationed at this Service Centre.
